Indonesia’s national police chief, General Timur Pradopo, says about 100 Mobile Brigade officers have been deployed at Pirime near Wamena in Papua, following the killing of three police officers.
General Pradopo says the shootings by unknown assailants took place early on Tuesday morning.
The Jakarta Post reports the general has refused to link the perpetrators to the separatist Free Papua Movement, the OPM.
Earlier Indonesian media had quoted a provincial police spokesman saying around 50 gunmen who are members of the OPM, had attacked the Pirime station and set it alight.
