The newly elected Speaker of the Nauru Parliament says the body will endeavour to elect a President and Deputy Speaker when it reconvenes on Thursday.
After five weeks of a political impasse a breakthrough was finally achieved earlier today with the election of Dominic Tabuna as Speaker.
He was the candidate of the caretaker Government and defeated a nominee from the opposition in a second ballot.
It had been expected the other office holders would be elected shortly after, but when Parliament reconvened this afternoon, Mr Tabuna adjourned the sitting until Thursday.
He says he’s confident a President will be elected then.
