22 PNG airports to be upgraded in 10-year project

Airports in Papua New Guinea are set to get a makeover to improve services and safety and to open up new economic opportunities.

640 million US dollars is being injected into the 10-year project that gets underway next year.

Most of the funds have come from the Asian Development Bank, but there is also financial backing from the government and the private sector.

The chief executive of Civil Aviation Authority or CAA, Joseph Kintau says one aim of the project is to have the airports meet international standards.

“It’s covering all 22 airports and the improvements would primarily concentrate on the runway, extension runway pavements, runway extensions and the safety aspect of airport operations.”
