Grant scheme in American Samoa sees workers hired for clean up

In American Samoa, an additional 50 temporary workers will begin work today under the National Emergency Grant from the US Department of Labor for clean up and recovery work related to the September 29th tsunami and earthquake.

An initial 100 temporary workers were hired for the Department of Public Works and the American Samoa Power Authority a week ago.

The temp jobs will last for six months and employees will be paid not less than the hourly minimum wage of $4.65 US.

The Governor’s Authorized Representative, Evelyn Vaitautolu Langford, says that other departments which have submitted requests for a total of 123 employees are Property Management, American Samoa Telecommunications Authority and Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Agriculture and Treasury.
