An MP in the autonomous Bougainville Government has been jailed for three years for sexual assault.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that Hilary Laris will only serve one year because two years of his sentence have been suspended as a result of his pre sentence report.

The sentence means that the MP loses his seat in the ABG Parliament.

Laris has been directed to report to the prison at Kerevat near Kokopo in East New Britain by late September.
