PNG’s Morobe government calls for sweeping public sector reform

Papua New Guinea’s political leaders will face a call for a total overhaul of the public service when they meet later this week in Lae in Morobe Province.

Government politicians are gathering for a national summit to set the country’s 50 year development strategy.

Preceding the meeting PNG’s 20 governors will meet to consider what political system best suits the country.

Our correspondent, Oseah Philemon, says little is known about what the governors might call for but the Morobe Province government met this week and was emphatic about what needed to happen.

“They are saying that there is no point in changing the system. The system as we have at the moment should be retained - what we need is a total overhaul of the public service. That is where the problem is. That is why services are not being delivered, because public servants are just too ineffective.”
