New organisation opposed to Fiji military regime set up

A new organisation opposed to the Fiji military regime is to be set up today.

In a press release, the new grouping, to be called the Movement for Democracy, says many groups and institutions are against the military takeover.

The Movement says it is now time to work closely together in the face of a prolonged social, economic and political crisis in Fiji

It is made up of the National Council of Women, the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement, the Pacific Concerns Resource Centre, the Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions, the Fijian Teachers’ Association, the United People’s Party, the National Federation Party and the former ruling party, the SDL.

They are mounting a joint campaign plan to return Fiji to parliamentary rule and persuade the interim government to put in place a clear and credible time table for elections.

They have also established a Fund for the Restoration of Democracy.
