Protest planned against change to right hand drive cars in Samoa

More than one thousand car owners in Samoa have decided to march in protest against the government’s plans to introduce right hand driving.

The protest plans emerged after a public meeting held over the weekend organized by lawyer, Tole’afoa Solomona To’ailoa.

The meeting was attended by members of the public and organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, the Umbrella for Non-governmental organizations, the Car rentals and Taxis associations as well as several public buses operators.

Many who spoke on the issue repeatedly asked for the government’s true reasons behind the move.

The demonstration is planned for when parliament resumes for its final session of the year.

The Prime Minister has urged those who strongly oppose or support the idea to voice their opinions when the proposed legislation goes to the Bills Committee of the house.
