Australian government upgrades travel advisory for visitors to Suva

Posted at 22:21 on 08 October, 2007 UTC

The Australian government has warned that there may be outbreaks of violence and civil unrest in Fiji because of the unresolved political situation.

The Australian department of foreign affairs and trade says it has received credible information to this effect applicable to areas in and around Suva.

It says the threat level has only increased in Suva and remains at its previous level in the rest of Fiji.

The updated travel advisory warns Australian citizens to avoid military installations and military activity and exercise a high degree of caution.
