Tropical Cyclone Kate is moving eastwards to the south of the Papua New Guinea capital Port Moresby, with winds of 100 kilometres an hour.

Tropical Cyclone Kate has been downgraded to a category one storm, and it’s expected to slow down during the next 12 hours.

A category one storm has destructive winds of up to 125 kilometres an hour and the Queensland Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre warns shipping in the area of strong winds.

The next bulletin is expected this afternoon from the Queensland Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre.
