Voting continues on Tokelau atoll of Atafu over political future

Posted at 01:23 on 14 February, 2006 UTC

Voting is continuing on the first of Tokelau’s three atolls to determine the political future of the New Zealand colony.

Electoral officials say 2-hundred people have registered to vote on Atafu in the referendum on whether Tokelau should seek limited independence in free association with New Zealand.

Our reporter, Sara Vuitalitu, says some people on Atafu have been extremely vocal in their resistance to any change to the status quo.

The people on Nukunonu and Fakaofo atolls vote later this week.
